Obiettivi formativi

The target are: to provide knowledge on regulated mineralogical investigation and those appropriate; to characterize minerals that have an impact on the environment and human health, the materials that contain them, and the different environments in which they are present (air, water, soil, natural and anthropogenic matrices); to provide knowledge for identifying cases of pollution and for choosing appropriate approaches and treatments to contain or reduce pollution by certain minerals (for example, use of natural and synthetic minerals to contain toxic and radioactive waste, for reclamation of materials containing asbestos and to make them inert).
The teaching contents contribute to the achievement of the educational objectives of the degree with regard to the practical and applicative aspects of the characterization of polluting or harmful minerals, of the materials that contain them and of the minerals suitable for specific reclamation. In particular, the techniques learned during the course provide a valuable tool for the characterization of environmental problems related to specific mineral species.

- conoscere i fattori da cui dipende l'inquinamento da parte di determinati minerali e l'utilizzo di altri per specifiche bonifiche;

- riconoscere, attraverso indagini appropriate, i vari minerali problematici per l'ambiente e la salute umana e distinguerli da specie mineralogicamente simili ma non regolamentate;
- scegliere le indagini adeguate a caratterizzare e quantificare minerali utili per bonifiche contenuti nelle rocce;

- sulle metodologie di indagine mineralogica più adatte per la valutazione di inquinamento da parte di specie minerali e per la identificazione delle specie minerali inquinanti e di quelle adatte per disinquinamenti;

Knowledge and understanding ability
At the end of this course the student will have:
- to know the characteristics of minerals that have an impact on the environment and human health and on the materials and environments in which they may be present;
- to know the investigations required by law and guidelines and also to know unregulated investigations particularly suitable for a correct characterization, aimed at the correct identification of the environmental issues;
- to know the types of pollution by certain minerals and the use of others for specific remediation;
- to have in mind which approach is scientifically adequate to identify the polluting/harmful mineral species, the sources and the causes of dispersion, the suitable methods of reclamation, the mineral species suitable for specific remediation.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding

At the end of this course the student will know:
- how recognize, through appropriate investigations, the minerals problematic for the environment and human health and distinguish them from similar but not regulated mineral species;
- how choose the appropriate investigations to characterize and quantify minerals contained in the rocks, useful for reclamation;
- how identify the different types of polluting or harmful mineral species present in the different matrices and connect them to the dispersion sources.

Judgment autonomy

At the end of the course the student will be able to make a judgment:
- on the most appropriate mineralogical survey methods for the evaluation of pollution cause by mineral species and for the identification of polluting mineral species and those suitable for removing pollution;
- on the quality of the acquired data and on the correctness of the elaborations carried out on them.

 Communication skills

At the end of the course the student must know:
- how use the technical language of mineralogy applied to the environment and of the investigation methodologies that are adequate and regulated in Italy.
- how coordinate with different professional figures working in the field of pollution and environmental remediation and in the related analytical field.

Learning ability

At the end of this course the student will have the ability to critically evaluate the types of investigations appropriate to the identification of the polluting mineral species, distinguishing them from those not regulated, and of the mineral species suitable for the specific cases of pollution remediation.
