Obiettivi formativi
L'obiettivo dell'insegnamento è di preparare gli studenti a superare il SET A. Lo stesso è anche finalizzato a fornire agli studenti i mezzi linguistici di base ovvero un livello all'incirca del B1 sulla scala CEFR europea per la conoscenza di una lingua.The aim of the course is to prepare student to overcome SET A and to give students base linguistic means i.e. approximately a B1 level on the European CEFR scale for the knowledge of a language.- Oggetto:

Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione
La finalità dell'insegnamento è assicurarsi che gli studenti che si laureranno avranno raggiunto per quanto concerne la grammatica e le abilità nel leggere della lingua inglese i livelli CEFR B1-B2.
Capacità di applicare conoscenza e comprensione
Alla fine delle lezioni gli studenti devono conoscere il sistema dei verbi in inglese, come si formano gli aggettvi superlativi e comparativi, le difficoltà che circondano i nomi numerabili e non numerabili e l'importanza dei pronomi per essere in grado di superare l'esame grammaticale della Scuola di Scienze. Dovranno inoltre essere in grado di leggere fluentemente brevi testi inerenti argomenti di geologia.

Capacità di apprendimento
Alla fine dell'insegmamento e dopo aver superato l'esame finale, gli studenti dovrebbero sentirsi pronti a incrementare il livello del loro inglese se desiderano rimanere nell'ambito accademico.
Knowledge and understanding: the aim of the course is to ensure that students graduating from our department have English language knowledge in the range of CEFR B1-B2 as far as their grammar and reading skills are concerned.
Applying knowledge and understanding: by the end of the course, students should sufficiently understand the nature of the English verb tense system, the formation of comparative and superlative adjectives, the complications surrounding countable and uncountable nouns and the importance of pronouns to be able to pass the School of Science in-house grammar examination. They should also be able to read straightforward short texts on topics connected to Geology and Earth Science.
Making judgements: not applicable
Communication skills: not applicable (there is no written or spoken language component to the course as our undergraduate students are not required to communicate their science in English at undergraduate level. Core science subjects are understandably given priority over foreign language learning in the teaching timetable for this degree subject).
Learning skills: at the end of the course, and after passing the in-house English examination, students should feel more confident about taking their English to the next stage should they decide to stay in academia.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
La prova scritta di inglese I consiste in 70 domande a risposta multipla. Lo studente deve completare delle frasi dimostrando così una buona conoscenza della grammatica e del significato delle parole. Il test dura un'ora e per accedere alla seconda prova (inglese II) lo studente deve rispondere correttamente a 35 domande.
La prova scritta di inglese II consiste in 24 domande a risposta multipla. Lo studente deve leggere dei brevi testi di carattere geologico e rispondere poi alle domande dimostrando così di aver comprensione il testo geologico letto. La prova dura mezz'ora e lo studente deve rispondere correttamente a 15 domande.
Se lo studente passa entrambe le prove verrà registrato sul libretto "approvato".
The English I written test consists of 70 multiple choice questions. The student must complete sentences thus demonstrating a good knowledge of the grammar and meaning of the words. The test lasts one hour and to access the second test (English II) the student must correctly answer 35 questions. The English II written test consists of 24 multiple choice questions. The student must read short geological texts and then answer the questions, thus demonstrating to have an understanding of the text read. The test lasts half an hour and the student must correctly answer 15 questions. If the student passes both tests, he will be registered as "approved".

Il docente, oltre alla spiegazione delle regole grammaticali e dei vocaboli, svolge delle esercitazioni durante le quali lo studente deve partecipare oralmente in inglese.
The teacher, in addition to the explanation of grammar rules and vocabulary, performs exercises during which the student must participate orally in English.
